around the docks

Here’s a few pics I snapped while taking a cooling swim around the docks a few days ago. Click away for a better look.

tubeworm

This one is of one of the many tubeworms that grow on almost everything. This particular one is growing on a sunken tugboat in the shallows.

banded coral shrimp

I was delighted to find a couple Banded Coral Shrimp on the side of one of the docks. These guys are larger than they look; the six antennae are at least ten inches long.

tarpon

There has been some great tarpon activity in the shallows lately. It’s easy to get close to these large fish, but mighty hard to get a good picture. Anyways, this pic of a pair cruising the feeding grounds is for Clive…

fairy basslet

This particular Fairy Basslet can always be found along one stretch of retaining wall in our haul-out pit. I’ve tried and tried to get a “normal” shot if it, but have read that these fish are very commonly found cruising ledges and walls on their sides or upside down.

By the way, I LOVE my new underwater camera housing…

fish on!

Filed under: nature,on the water — osteoderm @ 7:23 am

Caught my first Tarpon yesterday!
Still was feeling pretty sick, but after going to the doc and getting loaded up on drugs, I had a brief spurt of energy, and really wanted to go try my sabiki rig for baitfish. It was just the hour before sunset, but with plenty of light left. The sabiki yielded a few nice little 3″-4″ fish, so I hooked the smallest and dropped it back in to try and tempt the resident pair of Tarpon that live around our work dock.

More local fauna

Been trying to get a decent pic of one of these crazy spiders for some time. Hard to tell in a picture, but these critters aren’t silver; they’re totally metallic chrome. Also, for the people that don’t find insects as interesting, or perhaps just too creepidy, I’ve included a snap of one of the wee baby geckos living in my boat…

chrome spider a picture is awexome

Winged terrors…

I’d read about these crazy wasps that hunt tarantulas, paralyze them, then lay their eggs on them, but never thought I’d see one in person. Just about stepped right over this pair… It was really cool watching the giant 2″+ wasp struggling to get the small, yet not-quite paralyzed tarantula dragged into deeper bush. Gnarly. This crimson-winged beauty must be what spiders have nightmares about.
